What is TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) and what...
Lately a lot of you have been asking me about TPN.  So today I am going to explain to you the role TPN plays in the world of IBD and share some of my experiences on it.  I have been on TPN numerous times.  The most recent being this past June and July.  I would estimate that i’ve spent at least 3-4 months being fed TPN in total but possibly more than that. But what IS TPN you say?  Total...

Would you smoke cigarettes if it helped your UC?  →
This article was posted on Adam’s website ihaveuc.com  The doctor told this guy to start smoking 3-5 cigarettes per day.  He has been and he noticed his bowel movements decreasing from about 20-25/day to 5/day.   Would you smoke if it would help your UC? (It is said smoking has the reverse effect on Crohn’s patients). I am not passing any judgement here but I personally do not smoke....

You want me to put that where?...
I have never shared with you my experience with enemas.   Oohhhhh you guys, this was a blast! (literally)  Before I had my colon removed, during the worst flare-up of my life I was trying anything I could to get things under control.  At one point I was on 40mg of prednisone per day, I forget how many milligrams of asocol, but 12 pills of that per day, and mesalamine enemas.  The goal here was...

Does surgery cure ulcerative colitis?
Though a lot of patients will debate about this, a total colectomy (removal of the colon) and the lining of the rectum is said to cure UC.The reasoning behind this is ulcerative colitis only affects the large intestine (aka the colon) and rectum so a total proctocolectomy cures the disease because there is no longer a colon or rectum.  So why isn’t everyone with ulcerative colitis running...

"I know someone with IBD, isn't that just a bad...
I am sure you all have heard that before right? A conversation I had with a friend earlier sparked this blog.  This friend of mine has ulcerative colitis and has a hard time telling people in his life about his disease.  Often he down plays it and says he just has stomach aches. He is not the only one, I have had many people (often young people) tell me that they don’t want to talk about...

Is constipation a symptom of Crohn's disease? You...
A lot of people think that constipation is not a symptom of Crohn’s disease.  This is false angel faces.  Most people think that if you have Crohn’s disease you have more frequent trips to the bathroom and diarrhea.  While that is true for most people, Crohn’s disease can also cause constipation.  In some Crohn’s patients constipation can be caused by strictures partially...

Computer in the bathroom? Check!
I have a friend with crohn’s disease who sends texts while she is on the toilet.  Her text always ends with FTT (From the toilet).   This blog was just written ftt.  ;)

What my disease took away from me. And what it...
This post is going to be a bit more on the sad side (and long side), but there is a light at the end of this tunnel so bear with me. I was thinking today (as I so often think about this) about how much I have changed as a person because of my disease.  I feel like a huge part of who I was is missing now. Before I was sick I was insanely driven and competitive.  Probably to an unhealthy...
